I enjoyed the reading of this book, because Lancelot and Elaine were such a great couple, but there were things that I couldn't bring myself around, like the "madness" of Lancelot. I don't know much about the Arthurian Legends, and I don't know if Lancelot got himself lost, half-starved and reduced to the state of an animal, but in thhis book it happens one time, having the author offered prevously some glimpses of his madness. I don't know how Elaine could still be so sure about this, when he looks half-dead and crazy, even when she's got a little baby to take care of. Sometimes I just had to wonder if she should not become scared that something bad could happen to her or to the baby, with the rampages of Lancelot. At the end it seems that he was not crazy, or maybe something of his illness comes to her. It depends in if you believe in Avalon and in the Lady of the Lake or if you prefer to rationalize things.

All in all, is a great book, and I will buy the other two of the collection, because I enjoyed it so much.

Lancelot is just Lancelot (not so sure if "just" applies about Lancelot...), but Elaine is full of force and I think she's the perfect match for him.

Knights of the Round Table Lancelot Gwen Rowley 9780515141993 Books Reviews

As an avid (and some might say rabid) fan of anything Arhturian, I can appreciate an author applying twists and turns to the legend. "Knights of the Round Table Lancelot" certainly has those, particularly in the relationship between Lancelot and Gwenevere.

However, what I found appalling was the blending of two distinct Elaines into one character. The quote from Tennyson at the beginning of the book refers to Elaine of Astolat, a naive, romantic dreamer who pines away for Lancelot when he leaves his shield with her to fight disguised in a tournament. Her brothers are Tirre and Lavaine. Bernard is her father, not the family priest.

Elaine of Corbenic is the daughter of the Fisher King Pelles (not Pelleas who was a diffferent knight entirely) and she is a descendant of the blood line of the Holy Grail. She is also a conniving, deceitful woman who lures Lancelot to her bed and thus forces an unwanted marriage.

The two Elaines could hardly have been more different!

There are annoying problems with other characters as well. Cerdic was a mighty Saxon leader, not the son of a neighbor. The knight, Dinadan, was known as a prankster and definitely not an ally of Agravaine's. Claudas was king of Gaul, not emperor of Rome, although he did seek refuge there. The list goes on...

Generally, readers of historical fiction was some thread of truth woven throughout the story. If accuracy is not important, the reader might enjoy the plot. It is different.
I picked this book up and couldn't get into it the first time. I must have been tired. Picked the book up yesterday and finished it today. An excellent wonderful story, well written. Truly a great story. Immensely enjoyable. 5 stars.
Whether it's John Coltrane reworking "My Favorite Things" or Andy Warhol reproducing a rainbow of Marilyn Monroe images, one of the more difficult skills of a craftsman is taking something familiar, adding their own artistic touches, creating a new, fresh vision of the original - not meant to be better, just different. Ms Rowley has started her circumnavigation of the Round Table at one of the best known seats, Lancelot. I can see that this work will upset some Lancelot "scholars" (By the way, your Dungeonmaster called and they need your 12th level cleric to storm the Castle of Zarg!), but we're not dealing with George Washington or Winston Churchill here. It's a legend, not history. Ms. Rowley's plot is engaging and her characters are well developed and interesting, even the minor ones, and the romantic scenes will put a rivet in your codpiece. While I am interested to see if she can duplicate her effort with the less well known Geraint, I particularly look forward to see how she will present the other knight of repute, Gawain.
I liked this novel a lot because of it's original, and smart twist on the relationship between Gwen and Lance. I will not give away the twist, but Rowley wrote it amazingly believable that you just have to admire her for adding this original concept to the overdone and much repeated Arthurian legend. I like her characterization of Lance as a broken, guilty, and scarred warrior who finds his salvation in Smart, intelligent and practical Elaine of Corbenic and his son Galahad. I look forward to more of Rowley's tales of the Knights of the Round Table.
A very pleasant and surprising novel! I thought to myself, "I'll give this novel a try but I'm not expecting anything new." I was happily disappointed!

Sir Lancelot, King Arthur's first knight, embarks on adventure after adventure starting in Corbenic, the home of Elaine, later mother of his son, Galahad. Stereotypes do not mar the originality of this novel. Lancelot is not who everyone believes he is nor is Guinevere. This is a surprising new twist to their relationship that is refreshingly welcome.

Lancelot or Elaine do not have an easy time of it, from the realities of failed crops to the unwelcome magic of Morgause & The Lady of the Lake, this book has it all!

Will Lancelot and Elaine triumph over all the obstacles in their path or is their love forever doomed? Read on and find out, this story will enthrall you from beginning to end! The second novel in this series is KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE GERAINT and the third will be KOTRT GAWAIN (9/07).
